 With a history dating back to 1940, UAB Kauno keliai is the oldest road building company in Kaunas and one of the oldest companies in Lithuania. Beginning with the name the Road Company, which was later changed to the Road-Bridge Exploitation Trust, it continues the old and honourable traditions of our citys cobble road builders and asphalt layers in the interwar capital city. Kaunas streets, squares, pavements, staircases, old town streets, and embankments have been covered with asphalt over a period of many years by the specialists from our company. Well-known works by our masters include Laisvės Alėja, the Gardens of the War Museum and Musical Theatre, the Town Hall Square, the cobblework at Vilniaus, Daukšos, and other streets. As was true in times past, road builders not only lay new streets; they also repair and renovate them, spray sand and salt in the winter, and maintain almost all of the citys bridges, viaducts, and underground collectors.
In 2005, the company was privatised, thereby commencing its modernisation. Currently, it employs about 300 staff members. Since this company owns and operates good manufacturing facilities, its own quarry in Zatyšiai, and reliable machinery, UAB Kauno keliai is the main company engaged in street laying, maintenance, and repair work in Kaunas County. It also performs a significant amount of work in neighbouring counties. In 2006, the company opened a branch in Klaipėda, in which broadened its scope to a larger territory of Lithuania.
The manufacturing facilities for UAB Kauno keliai in Petrašiūnai occupy nearly 11 hectares and house a railway branch dedicated to these facilities. This manufacturing complex makes asphalt concrete, and in the near future, the modernised department of concrete items will expand its operations. The company accepts debris from outside construction free of charge and processes it into crushed aggregate. The companys machinery can be repaired in the in-house mechanical workshop. Modernised work stations are available for workers.
The company is continuously upgrading its industrial base, modernising its technological lines, and acquiring western construction machinery.
Recently, UAB Kauno keliai was awarded two contracts and completed much work for the Kaunas city municipality. The company repaired a part of Savanorių and Sukilėlių prospects, the Varniai bridge coating, and many other streets. In Nida, it engaged in a major overhaul of the road to Parnidis Dune. In Kretinga in 2006, the company completed the reconstruction of the southern block and currently is engaged in the reconstruction of Basanavičiaus and Šimkaus streets. The company also performs many tasks in other towns and regions. UAB Kauno keliai completes more than half of their work to fulfill orders for private companies, which includes installing parking sites and completing the area management works at shopping centres or industrial enterprises. The company has special machinery and is able to execute building demolition work, and it began laying underground networks in 2007. UAB Kauno keliai and its specialists are certified for laying public highways, railways, airports structures, sewage networks, and working with special and cultural heritage buildings and monuments. Additionally, the main products that are manufactured by the company are certified. UAB Kauno keliai has implemented a quality management system that meets the requirements for the LST EN ISO 9001-2001 standard. In 2007, it implemented an environmental management system that meets the requirements for the LST EN ISO 14001-2005 international standard.
The company is a member of the Lithuanian Quarry Association and the Construction Industry Association.
In 2007, the company's turnover was approximately 52 million litas.
